I was to take Gracie for the first time to a kennel for a two-week, intensive training program. This caused me to undergo a severe guilt trip given that I knew Gracie, as a rescue dog, had a very rough start in life and was significantly traumatized by her long shelter stay in puppyhood.
My guilt gave birth to a bad dream the night before taking her to the kennel. I was sitting on my couch in the family room and Gracie sat in front of me. I looked at her and asked her what was wrong. She “spoke” to me telepathically. She said, “I’m never going to see you again.” I assured her that everything would be fine, that the kennel was a safe place that would have nice people taking care of her. Gracie said, “I will be OK, but you will not see me again.” Again, I assured her that I would be there right on schedule to pick her up, we would have a joyful reunion and a long walk. She continued to look sad. I asked her what made her think I would not come back for her. She said, “I know what happens. Dogs see the past, present, and future.”
At that point, I woke up. Gracie was sleeping soundly on my bed. I gave her a good scratch and kissed her nose.
