I was chattering away at LeGrand asking her about her day and so on. Much to my surprise, she started responding. She started talking about the different people she had seen that day and their professions. I was shocked that she was talking (since she is only 3 months old) and I asked her if I could take a video to send to Marie. She said yes. When I started the video her speech deteriorated, but she still sounded way better than she should for her age.
I heard a siren and I realized that she and I were in a school and it was a tornado siren. Bad storms were rolling in from the west. LeGrand had never been in a school before and she had never even heard of such a thing as a tornado. We put our masks on because we knew we would be moving through the halls with all the pupils. We entered the hallway at the back of the pack, everyone moving through and down the building towards the bottom floor. While we were moving I tried to quickly explain to her what a tornado was and what we were doing. She was asking me, scientifically, how they form and behave. I didn't know the answer and I was embarrassed.
We get down to the lowest floor and it is a huge, open space with windows on all sides. It seems like the absolute worst place to try and weather a tornado. I found a big metal bench that was bolted to the concrete floor. I told LeGrand that we would have to take shelter there. Instead of being an infant she was a teenager.
A mean girl told LeGrand that she could be friends with anyone she wanted - insinuating that she shouldn't be friends with me. LeGrand made some polite reply, but didn't take the bait. I asked her if she knew what that girl was trying to say or do. LeGrand replied, "Oh yeah, I know!" and we both rolled our eyes.
