Anne: Everything Has a Cost

Robert is in med school so he tells me all sorts of horror stories from when he is at the hospital. I think this might have been inspired by his stories.

The dream begins with me in the lab at work. My coworker KG tells me that we have 100 vials needed for sterility testing (a process I do not normally do). I am automatically stressed because my boss tells us that this project needs to be done by the morning (sterility normally takes up to a week to complete). Robert comes to help me since KG goes home. Robert tells me he has been feeling nauseous all day. I become concerned but ask him if he needs to go home and rest. He begins to vomit blood. I am even more stressed now. I tell him we need to go to the hospital but he assures me he is fine and this is normal with stomach viruses (newsflash: it's not!!). He vomits again so I demand we go to the ER.

For some the reason the hospital is just across the street. It looks like a shopping center. There are multiple stories and courtyards. People are walking around leisurely. I call the hospital to tell them we are here and Robert needs to be seen ASAP. The ER resembles the ballrooms at Rupp

Arena. There are long carpeted hallways and smaller rooms. We walk into a room that has school chairs lined in rows by a dark wooden door. There is a customer service desk to the left. The lady at the desk tells us to take a number and the doctors will see him when it is his turn. Robert sits at the very front. I panic knowing that I need to take care of him and finish my sterility testing.

A girl from my high school, HP, sees me pacing in the waiting area. She comes up to me and says that knows an alternative cure that will save his life. Defeated, I tell her that I will do anything to save him. She pulls me aside so no one can hear our conversation. She informs me that she is a vampire and that she will turn him. He won't be immortal but it will be just enough to save his life and prevent any further immediate complications. I worry that he will become a full-on vampire and convince myself that vampires are tricksters.

I ask her what the catch is. HP tells me it won't cost much but there needs to be some kind of collateral. Hesitant, I ask her what she needs. She tells me that in order to save Robert's life, I must agree to give up my first born. Innocents (babies) are pure and guarantee that she remains youthful. I remind her that I am not pregnant nor do I have any babies to give up. She tells me that it does not have to be immediate but she will return when the time comes. I feel disgusted at the thought of giving up my first born but tell her that I will talk it over with Robert.

I woke up and am unsure if Robert lived to see the next day. However, that was the main topic of our conversation at breakfast. He said he wouldn't allow me to do such a ridiculous thing! I guess we are in agreement.
